COVID trend – DJ mixes live streams

Being asked a few times if I am planning to do live streams of my dj sets I wanna share with You my opinion about this internet trend. Let’s say one important thing – there are/was some streams really, really awesome, creative, joyful, and interesting if it comes to music selection: Neevald and his friends always good, Bob Sinclair, Martin Garrix from the boat, yes, yes, yes .. but …

I understand we (DJs) are not working these days, I understand we miss parties and playing music, I also agree we all love music but … there are some reasons I decided not to join this madness:

Everyone is streaming now and quality of 95% of shows are very low – unfortunately, I’m talking not only about backgrounds, videos, location of performance – music is bad, boring, You will watch one or two guys changing songs every 4-5 minutes and they don’t know what to do between the transition.

Speaking of video – streaming from little space made in the bedroom or living room, with equipment on funny table and window curtains and flowers in the background, wearing pajamas and sipping beer which You keep on Your speaker .. sorry but nobody likes it – and it does not matter what Your mom, sister, girlfriend or friend who wants to be a dj say.

All this effort almost every day (or every single day) to play for 2-3 hours for .. 8 people watching (3 of them probably are in that room while You are djing). The peak of live stream 19 people for 7 minutes. Really? And You will do it tomorrow again? Trust me You can utilize Your time better.

“DJs in a row” cover released by 001 Records

Many years ago my DJ friend told me about the movie “That’s all gone Pete Tong”. Everyone was advertising it as a movie about the “deaf DJ” which was very intriguing. After all, movie is just pure fun, crazy but simple story of music, Ibiza old times, DJ life problems. Obviously the most important is music and the movie opening track became one of my favorite songs ever. In 2020 I am giving You cover of this track called “DJs in a row” originally recorded by Schwab – I see it as a good party or dj set starter, I love the lyrics and bassline. The track is now available worldwide on all digital stores and streaming services, You can find DJ version on famous Beatport too.
After 8 years from my debut, my song is released by Polish record label 001 Records which means a lot to me.

Pandemic time well spent

We are entertainers, our industry was one of the first affected by the pandemic and probably one of the very last coming back to work after. Being busy preparing for our daily gigs, driving from one venue to another, searching for more events to play, going for meetings, going to bed really late, and trying not to sleep too long – that was our life before. Now we have plenty of time we don’t know how to utilize in the very beginning. Boom! Somehow we got what we usually pray for so use this time well until our madness starts again.

I finally have time to practice drumming, daily rudimental 30-60 minutes to improve my speed and technique. I definitely know my sampler way better now and some sound banks I created will help me to improve performance with any kind of music.

I decided to spend more time learning Ableton and Push2, watching some tutorials, learning tips&tricks to improve my workflow, and get some inspiration for upcoming songs. Again, it became my daily routine now and showed me that it’s never too late to learn something new.

Pandemic will end one day soon and we will go back to our DJ work – I dedicated some time to organize my music library, replace my hard drive, make proper music selection. I kept searching for new tunes so I can deliver fresh, interesting mixes when we start dancing again. It’s hard work when You realize how many songs You have, how many You really play or like, how many of them You really need.

I found time to read, and I’m not talking about the daily dose of annoying news on Your mobile screen. Use this free time to read a book, or two, or as many as possible – don’t waste it for Netflix binge-watching only, even if it’s fun sometimes. I read books I wanted to read but I was too busy (or I was thinking I am), I read novels, I read poetry, I read about music history – workout Your brain, feed it with something inspiring what will help You to be a better artist.

And last but not least – I think its the most important – spend time with Your family, if they far away now You have time and energy to call every day, to video chat more often, check on Your friends, there are no excuses now – keep in touch with them, be closer, be there for them.

Collab songs finally released worldwide

Needed”, “Chapa Kazi”, “Double life” – 3 songs with Mura KE and Zoey Kiritu finally are available worldwide in all digital stores and streaming services. That’s positive of having so much free time – I was finally able to do some research and make all these releases myself using online distributors. Now You can support us and enjoy our music on such platforms like Spotify, iTunes, Deezer, Boomplay, and 100 more.

If anyone wants to ask me which distribution is the best I would say “none”. You need to use 2 or maybe even 3 of them to add Your songs to all stores You want. You will never get all important services from one – sometimes cover song rights cant be provided, sometimes automatic royalties sharing not implemented, sometimes service is free, sometimes per song, sometimes per artist. You need to do that same research as I did and decide what fits You. It takes time because there are so many now – just go trough their www sites, check reviews on multiple groups and You will find the perfect one.

Enjoy our music, more is coming soon. But first, two of my finished, cover songs have to be released – “DJs in a row” by Schwab and “Pretty Woman”. Stay tuned.

2019/20 UAE season short summary

My last post in 2019 was about Ghana event – it doesn’t mean nothing happened after it.

December was very busy as usual in the UAE. I kept playing my DJ residency hours in Fairmont The Palm 5 days a week. I did a few additional gigs during the festive season. At the end of the year, I was drifting more and more to chilling progressive vibes and afro house, enjoying the weather and breathtaking sunsets on The Palm, trying to switch to my new drum sampler since my previous unit literally burnt.

New Years’ Eve night I was playing the second year in the row in beautiful Sixth Sense Resort in Oman Ziggy Bay along with a really good band from Russia. It’s always very unique and challenging performance in this special place – You should check this resort online. It’s even more satisfying because it’s the client of our event company – Production7.

Until March everything was going very smoothly for all of us, I was already planning Ramadan trips and fresh music for the new season starting in the last days of May, unfortunately, all entertainment in UAE was stopped and the season finished for me in the last week of March. Can’t wait to start playing music again.
